A scoping review of the Korean studies on health impacts of urban sprawl

Abstract
Purpose: Urban sprawl is a form of land use characterized by unplanned, low-density development and has been a research area of interest to urban planners. Sprawl can also have a negative impact on health by affecting the urban environment, such as increased car use, environmental pollution, and decline of inner cities.

Methods: The purpose of this study was to analyze the status of domestic research in Korea on the impact of urban sprawl through a scoping review. Among domestic academic databases, the Korea Journal Citation Index (KCI) and the Academic Research Information Service (RISS) were searched for domestic studies published after 2000 using the keywords ¡®sprawl¡¯ and ¡®unplanned development¡¯. A total of 911 articles were searched, of which 17 articles were finally selected based on selection and exclusion criteria.

Results: The year of publication, journal, spatial scope, unit of analysis, number of samples, temporal scope, independent variables, dependent variables, sprawl measurement method, data, analysis method, and main research results of each paper were recorded. Research results show that research on the effects of sprawl has tended to increase in recent years. The researchers¡¯ academic fields were mostly engineering and social sciences, with no health care fields. The majority of sprawl analysis methods were comprehensive analysis using multiple indicators. Variables affecting sprawl included health outcomes, environment, transportation, and housing, and health outcomes included obesity, depression, suicide, and COVID-19.

Conclusion: The effects of sprawl were mostly negative, but there were also some positive effects. The results of this study show that sprawl is related to health, and therefore suggest that Korean researchers in the field of public health should pay more attention to sprawl in the future.
